A reference figure and a live quote are different claims

The figure here is a reference mid derived from readings taken on a measured account. It is stated as indicative and it is not the figure applied to any particular transaction. A quote on a trading screen is a live two-sided price for a specific instrument at a specific instant. Comparing them and calling the gap an error compares two things that were never the same claim.

Because the two are different claims, no arithmetic reconciles them and no setting brings them together. That is worth saying plainly: a gap of this kind has no owner, and the search for a side to blame ends without a result no matter how long it runs.

The practical rule is to decide first which claim you need. A reference figure is for scale — roughly how much is this, in the other currency. A live quote is for the thing you are about to do. Neither one substitutes for the other, and using the wrong one is not a fault in the tool.

The three ways this tool can actually be wrong

It can return nothing. An empty result box after valid inputs is a device-side fault: something local is preventing the page from running its calculation. It is the easiest of the three to confirm, because it survives every input you try and disappears entirely on another machine.

It can answer a question you did not ask. If a result does not move when an input changes, or corresponds to a pair you did not select, the answer on screen belongs to a previous state. That is a page-side fault, and the marker is that the figure is internally consistent but attached to the wrong inputs.

It can be answering from an older reading than it appears to. The reference date is printed alongside the figures for exactly this reason. A date that has not advanced does not make the figure meaningless, but it does change what the figure is a statement about.

Where the disagreement is yours to settle

Most reported disagreements are settled by the person reporting them, in seconds, because they come from the inputs rather than from the tool. The direction of the pair, the amount actually entered, and which of the two currencies is the one being converted from are the three usual sources, and all three are visible on screen.

The next most common source is comparing against something that is not comparable: a figure that already includes a charge, a figure rounded elsewhere for display, or a figure from a different moment. None of those is a defect in either source; they are different objects with similar shapes.

What is left over after those checks is small, and it is the part that is worth taking seriously. A tool that returns nothing, ignores its inputs, or carries a date that has stopped advancing is genuinely faulty, and those three symptoms are specific enough to name without guessing.

Settle a converted figure in five checks

  1. Confirm the direction: which currency is being converted from and which to. A reversed pair produces a figure that looks wildly wrong and is arithmetically perfect.
  2. Change one input and watch the result. A result that does not move is answering an older question, and that is a fault rather than a preference.
  3. Read the reference date printed with the figures before treating the number as current.
  4. Compare only against another reference mid, never against a figure that already carries a charge or a display rounding applied somewhere else.
  5. If the box stays empty on every input, move to a second device before concluding anything about the tool.
